Oratorio Society of New York Opens 2024-25 Season with Carmina Burana at Carnegie Hall
The Oratorio Society of New York (OSNY) kicks off its 2024-2025 season with a thrilling performance of Carmina Burana on Monday, November 11, 2024, at 7:00 pm at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. Under the direction of Music Director Kent Tritle, this program also includes Oliver Caplan’s Cloud Anthem, Libby Larsen’s Invitation to Music, selections from Brahms’ Liebeslieder, and Schubert’s beloved songs, Der Tanz, D. 826 and Lebenslust, D. 609.
The evening will feature soprano Eva Martinez and tenor John Riesen, both making their Carnegie Hall debuts, alongside Grammy Award-winning baritone John Brancy. Tritle will conduct Carmina Burana with the support of pianists Amir Farid and Blair McMillen, and the Cathedral Choristers of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. OSNY’s Associate Conductor David Rosenmeyer will lead the program’s first half, showcasing a blend of classical pieces and modern compositions.
This rendition of Carmina Burana is a rare treat, featuring Carl Orff’s own arrangement for two pianos and percussion. “The sound of the chorus crying out to Lady Fortune, with nearly 190 singers at full voice, will be a thrilling moment,” shares Tritle. “Our soloists are spectacular, with the remarkable young Eva Martinez and the fabulous John Riesen making their Carnegie Hall debuts.”
In addition to Orff’s masterwork, OSNY will present the New York premiere of Oliver Caplan’s Cloud Anthem, a composition inspired by Richard Blanco’s poetry. “It’s a profound message of unity,” shares Caplan, whose work has been widely celebrated for its emotional depth. The evening will also include Libby Larsen’s Invitation to Music, set to Elizabeth Bishop's Sonnet, and selections from Brahms’ Liebeslieder, Op. 52.
Following Carmina Burana, OSNY will perform its 150th rendition of Handel’s Messiah on December 23, 2024, at Carnegie Hall. This holiday classic will feature an impressive cast, including soprano Nola Richardson, countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, tenor Joshua Blue, and bass-baritone Joseph Parrish.
