Brooklyn Story Sharing Day (315 Berry St, Brooklyn @ 9:00 AM)

videoout "So, I actually kind of struggled with my story. First of all, I'll reference a lot of ways, the film is hailed as a coming of age story instead of a coming out story. Like the lead character in Moonlight, I grew up in poverty. I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There were no other people that looked like me as a black, queer, femme. My mother was a teenage drug addict. I didn't have a stable home. And it didn't really matter if I was gay or the valedictorian or anything - my mere existence was an annoyance to my mother. So getting food on the table, making sure to get to school on time, making sure that I wasn’t beaten, making sure that I didn't say the wrong thing that would trigger her to remind me once again that she should have had an abortion. Moving from home to home every single time we were evicted. Having some of her drug addict boyfriends sent into my room at night to fondle me. That was my existence, so I didn't really have time to go through this 90210 or Molly Ringwald identity of like, 'Am I a jock or am I as this or that?' My daily existence was just an existence of survival. For me, my first kind of identity...was a blank canvas so that I could paint whatever I thought you wanted me to be to minimize getting punched, getting beaten, getting raped, getting kicked out of my house... I started taking on this other identity. This strong, black, femme, resilient person who is self-reliant, and I'm doing stuff to take care of myself. Self-love was such an important journey for me... So it just so happened in the all-girls dorm that I met this really cute girl, and I fell in love with her... but at that time, I was just like, 'I'm a lesbian.' I didn't have anyone to tell... I had nobody who cared that I was gay." @anitadolcevita . . #lesbian #gay #LGBTQIA #queer #femme #lgbtq #lgbt #instagood #comingout #pride #gaysofinstagram #shareyourstory #tellyourtruth #love #thrivingnotsurviving #yourtruthisincredible #loveisloveislove #goodvibes #albuquerque #NewMexico #NYC #videoout #joinin @dapperq . . Into the Deep: An Immersive Oceans Course (200 Central Park W, Manhattan @ 6:00 PM)

amnh Smile like the redlip blenny (Ophioblennius atlanticus)—it’s almost the weekend! This odd-looking fish is endemic to the Atlantic Ocean, found around tropical reefs from North Carolina to Bermuda and the Gulf of Mexico. Using its hind fins, it perches itself on the floor in shallow waters, feeding on algae and odds and ends of organic waste. Its smile is marked by two sharp canine teeth, and it has a fierce bite! It’s also quick to defend its territory, chasing away trespassers. Photo: Philippe Guillaume

Join deep-sea evolutionary biologist Mercer Brugler as he takes us on a deep dive into the science behind the Unseen Oceans exhibition during this five-part immersive course.

Featured guest scientists and experts will deliver a close look into some of the oceans’ most awe-inspiring characteristics—from bioluminescent organisms and giant squid to the unexplored depths of the oceans' most mysterious regions. This course takes place inside the Unseen Oceans exhibition.
