It’s no secret that living in NYC is a rather expensive lifestyle choice.

Even if you just focus on the necessities (Netflix and Insomnia Cookies count, right?) expenses can quickly add up. On top of that, most of us spend more in December than any other time of the year, getting all our holiday gifts in order.

We're here to alleviate that stress on your wallet by making sure you take advantage of the many exciting and completely free events going on this month!

1. Broadway Under the Stars (December 4th & 11th @ 5 p.m.)

theshopsatcolumbuscircle

Obviously, it's not exactly easy or cheap to check out one of the many incredible Broadway shows around here. So in the meantime, get a little sneak peek at this free concert performance series at Columbus Circle featuring songs from your favorite shows.

Coming up this month, on the 4th we've got performances from the cast of Waitress, Chicago, and Anastasia and on the 11th, there's SpongeBob SquarePants, Once on This Island, and A Bronx Tale.

Totally free, and no RSVP needed, just show up!

2. The Office Trivia (December 5th @ 8 p.m.-9:30 p.m.)

If this interests you as much as it does us and you're a true fan, then you've probably got this one in the bag. Like most The Office fans, you've watched every episode single multiple times, making this your time to shine.

Might as well join in on the "friendly" competition at The Chelsea Bell on 316 8th Avenue and win some cool prizes (to be announced).

Be sure to reserve your spot here. Make a team or ride solo if you don't need any help!

3. Drunken Shakespeare (December 11th @ 7:30 p.m.)

You've probably heard of this inebriated performance before. Question is, have you actually gotten around to going? Because it is truly a one of a kind experience.

Whether you've got an audition piece you're eager to flaunt or just looking to get in on the Shakespearean festivities, they're judgment free. AND it's not all business... In fact, it's not "business" at all, it's about as serious as singing in the shower, but with your clothes on, accompanied by booze, raffles, and more!

So practice a few times in the mirror before heading over to Bar 9 at 807 9th Avenue. Here's more info, you'll be redirected to their Facebook page where you can RSVP!

4. What The Dickens? A Christmas Carol Marathon (December 16th @ 12-4:30 p.m.)

This annual Christmas Carol Reading Marathon is in its eighth yearβ€”have you ever been?

Here's how it works: you hang out, enjoy some food and drinks, and from noon to 4:30 p.m. various writers and performers read aloud from the classic holiday tale, A Christmas Carol. There will be some festive treats, hot cocoa, and Christmas carolersβ€”plus a 10% discount off all books!

The event takes place at 126 Crosby Street and starts at 12 noon, but official readings start at 1 p.m. No need to RSVP, just show up!

5. Unsilent Night (December 17th @ 6 p.m.)

unsilent.night

"Unsilent Night" is a fresh and unique take on traditional Christmas music, it allows for audience participation and lets us all get our harmonizing on.

Started by Phil Kline in 1992, you come with or without some form of music-playing device (boom boxes are always fun) and either download Kline’s composition online or throw in a cassette tape or CD being handed out.

Participants will have all different sections of the piece, all playing simultaneously as the mob walks together from Washington Square to Tompkins Square Park.

It’s an incredible celebration every year, don’t miss out on this one! Here's more info on how to get involved.

6. Beat Street Free Screening (December 20th @ 8-11 p.m.)

Brooklyn Bazaar has exciting events going down all month long, we definitely recommend checking out the calendar for yourself.

One thing we know and love this venue for is their regular screenings of classic films. For example, a free screening of Beat Street (1984), will be held on the 20th of this month.

No need to RSVP, it's free and first come, first serve. So get to 150 Greenpoint Avenue early to get a spot! The restaurant and bar are open before, during and after the film.

7. Hack City Comedy Show (December 20th @ 7:30)

Free comedy show AND free crepes? Seems almost too good to be true, doesn't it?

First come, first serve on seating, so might as well get to Black Cat LES at 172 Rivington Street early to snag your spot to enjoy the show!

8. Speakeasy Burlesque at the Black Lodge (Month-Long)

Yessss! Can't have enough of these. You've probably heard of the Black Lodge, upscale bar and burger joint. But did you know there's also a speakeasy downstairs?

Come through to Black Lodge at 20 Prince Street for DJs nightly, handcrafted creative cocktails, craft beers, and more!

It's classy yet casual and just looks like a great time. The bar is open until late of course, AND the kitchen stays open late too. Make a resi here!

9. Free Cupcakes in SoHo (any day)

georgetowncupcake

So this isn't actually an event, but we thought we'd just let you in on a little secret you may not know about.

Head over to Georgetown Cupcakes at 111 Mercer Street in SoHo for a treat, but first, check their twitter for the flavor of the day. Tell the cashier what it is, and if you're one of the first 100 customers, you'll get a free cupcake! You're welcome.
