Brownie Points: 7 Best Bakeries for Brownies in NYC

People say that opposites attract. Sure, sometimes that's a great thing. You're an introvert and your extrovert boyfriend breaks you out of your shell, while you tone him down from being the constant social butterfly.

But there's a time where having opposing opinions can put a severe strain on your relationship. No, we're not talking about politics, kids, or money (all of which can legitimately ruin a relationship).

We're talking whether or not you like cakey or fudgy brownies.

When it comes to brownie preference, there is no true compromise. But then again, you've got brownies, so are you really going to complain?

No, no you're not. You're going to sit on the floor of your apartment with your extroverted boyfriend and devour those suckers together, because that's what love is.

Here are the best bakeries to purchase delicious brownies in NYC, however you like them.

1. Fat Witch Bakery (75 9th Avenue)

Fat Witch Bakery proudly proclaims that they are "New York City's Legendary Brownie," and they deliver on that promise. These brownies are rich, thick, and delicious. The exterior is crispy, but the interior is perfectly fudgy.

While they have a bunch of individually wrapped flavors, we highly recommend that you get the original "Brownie," "Nutella Brownie," and "Caramel Brownie."

2. Glaser's Bake Shop (1670 1st Avenue)

If you've never been to Glaser's Bake Shop on the UES, you need to experience it immediately. It's a cute, little old fashioned bakery in the heart of a rapidly changing city. Their baked goods are rustic and delicious just like the ones your grandmother used to make.

Their brownies are traditional and flavorful. Make sure to try their "Double Chocolate Chunk" for the soft brownie texture combined with the crunch of chocolate chunks, or the "Chocolate Pecan."

3. Baked (various locations)

Do you love fudgy brownies? These are the ones for you. Baked is pretty much a superstar bakery in our opinion, and these brownies are as insanely delicious as everything else they make. Maybe you've already had their "Brookster" (cookie baked into a brownie), but it's time for the real deal.

You have to get to Baked soon to try their seasonal "Peppermint" brownie. We'd also highly recommend their "Sweet + Salty" for a tasty twist on a timeless classic.

4. Amy's Bread (various locations)

Did you think that Amy's Bread only bakes bread? You're dead wrong. You need to try some of her pastries because they are out. Of. This. World. And we're talking about her cakes, sticky buns, and, of course, brownies.

The brownies from Amy's Bread can come with or without nuts. Whether you like the nuts for crunch or the smooth texture of plain brownies, you'll be a happy camper after just one bite.

5. Dominique Ansel Kitchen (137 7th Avenue)

You must have heard of Dominique Ansel before. He's the man behind the cronut and the chocolate chip cookie shots. He's also the man behind one of our favorite, creative brownies.

The "Sage-smoked Moist Brownie" from Dominique Ansel Kitchen is a must for anyone in the vicinity of NYC. Seriously, we'd travel hours for this stuff. It's a combination of rich, fudgy square of chocolate and the soft spice of sage. In short, we're obsessed.

6. Schmackary's (various locations)

We've told you about Schmackary's cookies (because they are awesome), but did you know they have mouthwateringly rich and delicious brownies? Well now you do. They have nine different flavors of brownies that rotate daily and seasonally.

We'd recommend the "German Chocolate Brownie," with cocoa, semi-sweet chocolate and a coconut pecan glaze. If you don't like coconut, try the "Dirty Leprechaun," with cocoa, mint chips, semi-sweet chocolate, and a mint cream cheese frosting.

7. H Bake Shop (601 West 57th Street)

hbakeshop Gluten Free Almond Cocoa Nibs Brownie. Soooo moist and you never would be able to tell it is #glutenfree #organic #nyc #newyorkbakery

This spot is excellent for pretty much any baked good, but we're really loving the fact that they offer gluten-free options for brownies. Their brownies are large and totally worth the $3.50 price tag. The "Gluten-Free Fudge Brownie" is made with almond flour and cocoa-nibs (for crunch).

If you don't have to be gluten-free (sorry, people with Celiacs and gluten-allergies), try the "Sticky Toffee Brownie," made with bittersweet chocolate, homemade toffee and a bit of cayenne pepper for a subtle kick.
