After the horrifying attacks last week in Paris, New York City has taken measures to increase our security.

According to Reuters, this response was precautionary rather than as a response to any specific threat.

"We have long believed that we are the number one terrorist target in the world because of all we represent," NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton told MSNBC.

In response to Friday's terrorist attacks in Paris, the NYPD deployed officers from its Counterterrorism Response Command to areas frequented by tourists, and to the French Consulate in Manhattan.

"Teams have been dispatched to crowded areas around the city out of an abundance of caution to provide police presence and public reassurance as we follow the developing situation overseas," said the NYPD in a statement.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said police were on heightened alert at all of the agency's bridges, tunnels, and rail facilities.

Otherwise, the NYPD didn't specify which areas of concern have amped up police presence. Nor did the NYPD say how many extra officers are being deployed.

Even though we don't have the exact numbers nor the exact locations, we feel reassured in the fact that our city officials are taking extra measures and staffing extra officers to protect us from harm.

The NBA said it was increasing security at its venues, and NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said, "Security at our games is always at a heightened state of alert."

"We know of no specific or credible threats of an attack on the U.S. homeland of the type that occurred in Paris [last week]," said U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

Still, the knowledge that the NYPD has deployed more officers to areas they see as NYC's most vulnerable makes us markedly less afraid. Also, of course, we should reject fear in our every day lives, since being afraid is exactly what the terrorists want us to do.
