Take Notes, Ladies: 7 Things Girls Should Definitely Avoid Talking About on a First Date in NYC (As Told by a Guy)

First dates in New York City are always a struggle. Well, they’re pretty much a struggle everywhere, but particularly in NYC. First dates are usually pretty awkward.

You don’t want anyone to know that you met each other on Tinder, so you’re both acting sort of shady. You’re desperately hoping that the other person looks like their internet pictures even though they inevitably don’t.

Look, everybody says dumb stuff when they’re in stressful, awkward situations like this, usually it’s the dude.

However, on occasion, girls say things that can have disastrous results. Don’t worry, we’re here to hook you up with some premium advice.

Now read on to learn about 7 things girls should definitely avoid saying on a first date.

1. Don't describe the plot to an entire episode of Broad City

Most dudes have seen an episode or two of Broad City. It does come on after Workaholics after all. I’ll admit that some episodes are pretty funny, but most dudes would disagree.

It’s a pretty bad move to describe the entire plot to anything on a first date. Total conversation killer.

Plus, your reenactment of when Abby and Ilana go on a booze cruise and get trapped in the liquor locker isn’t going to suddenly change a dudes mind about the quality of the show.

Maybe wait until the third date to try and convince him to watch a show that he’s already sampled and isn’t really in to.

2. Don't ask, “Do you want to raise your kids on Long Island or in the city?”

This is arguably the worst thing you can say. It’s a sneaky way of asking a dude if he wants kids or not without giving him the option of saying, “I hate children, they are monsters.”

It just puts the dude in a really awkward position and makes him think that you are already picking out dresses and wedding venues. Maybe leave the kids discussion for date number two or three.

3. Don't gush about your hometown

This is a classic transplant mistake. There’s nothing real New Yorkers hate more than transplants and gentrification. Real New Yorkers might hate transplants more than serial killers.

Look, it’s fine to bring up where you’re from, but let’s get one thing straight, NYC is the greatest city on the goddamn planet. Don’t get it twisted.

You live in NYC now and if you really think Wichita is better, than you should probably move back there.

4. Don't say, “My ex and I used to come here all the time”

Never, I repeat, never talk about your ex on a first date. This goes for dudes too. It’s like rule number one of dating.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been broken up for five years or five minutes. It doesn’t matter if you have a totally platonic relationship and hang out all the time watching back episodes of The Hills together.

It doesn’t matter if your ex is a girl. It doesn’t matter if your ex is married and has three kids and moved to Florida. None of that matters.

Don’t bring him or her up on the first date. It’s simply a bad move all around and makes you seem like you’ve never been on a first date before.

5. Don’t talk about how fat you are

curryanything A boyfriend did pick me up once at the age of 17 but this is #funnyasever #truestory #funnypictures #funny #funnymemes #bestquotes #bestoftheday #quotestagram #quotes #quote #quoteoftheday #picoftheday #lol #lmao #knowthyself #fatgirlproblems #lovelife #loveyourself #bethebestyou #havealaugh

This sounds like a super sexist thing to say, but hear me out.

One of two things is going on here. The first is that you’re not fat at all. You’re just sneaky asking for a compliment. That’s fine, kind of annoying move, but whatever.

The second is that you are kind of fat, but guess what? The dude you’re on a date with is super into it. He probably wouldn’t be on a date with you if he didn’t think you were hot. There are a ton of dudes who prefer girls with a little meat on their bones. Just ask Meghan Trainor.

If this is the case, you’ve set up a lose-lose situation. If he tells you the truth and says, “I like you just the way you are.”

You are going to be pissed and think that he’s calling you fat. If he lies and says, “I think you’re skinny,” or something to that affect, then you’re going to think he’s lying or insulting your intelligence.

Well, maybe not. Maybe that would make you happy, but is that really what you want?

A shallow compliment that doesn’t reflect the fact that he thinks you’re smoking hot regardless of your weight? It just puts him in a super sticky situation, so avoid it or just call me a sexist pig and ignore my advice.

6. Avoid talking about homeless people

Homeless people in NYC are very hot topic in the media these days, but bringing them up on a first date makes it seem like you’re trying to size up how generous the dude you’re on a date with is.

Homeless people just don’t seem like the best first date material.

This isn't really a deal breaker or anything like that, but it creates an awkward situation.

Homeless people are kind of a depressing topic. Too depressing for a first date. Plus, it's kind of political and way more of a serious topic than you need for a first date.

7. Avoid talking about Planned Parenthood

joshuaxhunter75 #yes #truth #lameduckcongress #uscongress #plannedparenthood #istandwithplannedparenthood #freedomtochoose #equalrights #healthcare #republicunt #democrap #libtards

This is another very hot political topic these days. It’s never a good move to bring up politics on a first date, but especially not Planned Parenthood.

Nobody wants to think about STD screenings and abortions on a first date. In fact, that’s like the opposite of what people want to think about on a first date.
