Okay, so they're are lots of people in New York City who suck.
Mean cops, mean bartenders, and mean people on the subways.
There is no shortage of meanies here for whom it seems their only goal is to ruin your day.
But guess what? Those aren’t the only ones in this city. How could there be? So many effin' people live here.
And guess what else? In addition to all of the New Yorkers who suck, there are some really, really amazing people. And they make dealing with all the bad people worth it.
Want to know who they are? Then read on, my friend. Read on.
1. The bartender who gives you free shots

Holla to all the free shot bartenders. It’s a ruthless world out there and you guys make life so much more worth living.
When I show up at the bar, ask for a whiskey and coke extra strong since this is my ex-boyfriend’s concert, and you hand me a free shot of whiskey and take one with me, I just really feel some camaraderie.
You guys are all rock stars, keep it up.
2. The person who holds the subway doors

So, everyone else on the train might hate you, but I definitely don’t. Thank you for sacrificing your amicability among the other passengers for me.
Because of you, I will not be waiting at the 51st Street train station for another six minutes, and I might actually get to class on time.
Because of you, I know that strangers actually do care about whether I’m stuck waving my arms like a lunatic after the subway pulls away.
Because that’s not a good look, and now, because of you, I’m chilling out on this subway, listening to music, trying not to notice how badly this subway car smells.
3. The amazing busker

To all you rastafari mofos and gorgeous girls whose voices sound like the perfect ascension to heaven: you rock.
When I’m stressed out and harried and my bag weighs me down, and I’m standing waiting for a subway train, and then your voice and your perfectly strung guitar chords cut through the air, well, my heart just swells with love for you.
All I can really do is stand beside you and grin, maybe hand you a dollar or two, but there really is no compensation for the feeling of one soul connecting with another.
4. Cute babies

I love all of you. Really, I might get annoyed with your parents for how long it takes them to carry your stroller up the subway stairs, but I know it’s not their fault.
To the baby that just sat across from me on the 6 train playing with her Spiderman toy the whole ride, you’re the best.
I love your bubbly, happy eyes, and your tiny hands. And I love your Spiderman toy. Cute baby, I hope you invite me over to play soon.
Thanks for rocking my world, and making my heart gush with emotion.
,5. Friendly puppies

... and their owners. Thank you for your endless, nonstop reservoirs of patience when my friends and I jump up and down and scream and coo at the sight of your friendly puppy.
To the puppies: thank you for your puppy grins, your puppy kisses, your excitement, and for making me feel like you loved me, even though we only hung out for like five minutes.
Yes, I do say I love you to dogs I don’t even know. Got a problem?
6. Weed dealers

I love these guys, because they rock. Who would say their weed dealer doesn’t rock? A crazy person? Here’s why I love my weed dealer: they sell me weed.
Here’s why else I love weed dealers: they don’t worry about the law that decrees I can’t get high.
Why would the law decree such a terrible thing?
Well, that’s completely beyond me, but thank you for keeping marijuana flowing freely behind closed doors in New York City.
And in front of closed doors, like the guy who was sitting across from me on the subway rolling a joint on Sunday, rock on.
7. Supers

Well, I don’t really know if your super rocks, but my super definitely rocks.
Skender, thanks for being amazing.
Thanks for letting me into the building that weekend I was wasted and forgot my keys, thanks for fixing my closet doors when I knocked it off its track, and thanks for not saying anything about our giant collection of alcohol when you came over to fix our toilet.
You’re an all-star, and without you I don’t know what I’d do. I’d definitely be locked out of my apartment way more.
8. Nice celebrities

To all of the nice celebrities at bars and events, on our streets, and in restaurants: thanks for being nice. Thanks for bestowing your super human kindness upon me. Thank you, really, for even existing.
I know that to you our hug was just a hug, but to me it was much, much more.
Thank you for pretending, even for a brief flash of a second, that we could be friends. That your life bears any semblance at all to mine, and that maybe we might hang out.
I know we’ll never hang out, but it was sweet of you to pretend.
