Welcome Back? MTA Will Officially Propose to Bring Back the W Subway Line in 2016 | spoiled NYC

The MTA has announced they intend to hold a public hearing on possibly restoring W train service in Queens and Manhattan this fall.

In an effort to facilitate rerouting the Q train when the Second Avenue Subway opens later this year, the MTA has announced the potential return of the W train to effectively replace the current Q service in Queens.

As part of the plan, the MTA said that the Q train would temporarily terminate at 57th Street/Seventh Avenue but would eventually head north under Second Avenue to 96th Street when that subway project is completed.

“With every day’s work on the Second Avenue Subway, the MTA gets closer to fulfilling a promise first made to New Yorkers in 1929,” said MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast.

“Opening the Second Avenue Subway will provide new options for our customers and relieve congestion on Lexington Avenue 4, 5 and 6 trains.”

The newly proposed W service would make local stops from Astoria-Ditmars to Whitehall Street via the Broadway line, with no trains running on weekends or late nights, the MTA added.

The MTA aims to have a public hearing on the W proposal this spring to implement the new service by the fall.
