New York's Uber passengers will see lower rates starting Friday.

UberX and UberXL users will see their base fares drop by about 15 percent while fare minimums, per mile rates and per minute charges will also drop, the New York Daily News reported. Uber drivers first took a rate cut in July 2014 in an effort to undercut taxi rates.

The Uber X base fare will decrease from $3 to $2.55, per mile rates will drop to $1.75 from $2.15, and each minute will now cost 35 cents instead of 40 cents, Gizmodo added in a related report.

In a blog set to be published on Friday, Uber defended the cuts, saying lower rates mean more business, the Daily News added. Taxi drivers, though, disagreed with that logic.

“It’s outrageous,” Bhairavi Desai of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance said to the Daily News. “They’re putting drivers in poverty wages just so they can try to monopolize taxi service.”
