Drink, Drank, Drunk: 6 Quintessential NYC Films (And What to Drink While Watching 'Em)

Like any sensible New Yorker, we enjoy coming home from a long day (and what feels like a longer commute) and having a nice, stiff drink.

And if there happens to be a good movie on, we’re down to watch.

And if they’re films featuring the NYC of old, why not try and find a drink to match the movie?

It’s not an uncommon epiphany, as we’ve discovered in books and blogs, but we thought we’d share some of our favorite pairings of New York cinema and, uh, well, just plain booze.

1. Gangs of New York

This is the toughest one, because it’s got the most ingredients. But hey, what did you expect, it’s paired with a Scorsese film, sh*t’s gonna get messy.

You’ll need some Irish Whiskey (Liam Neeson’s in it), cherries (nothing says excruciating pain and suffering like maraschino cherries!), bitters (have you seen this movie before?) and if you’re up for it, some olives. Does it leave you with a bad taste in your mouth? Good.

2. Wall Street

“Greed is good,” so says Gordon Gekko in this Oliver Stone flick. You know what else is good? Tequila. And like this film, it’ll have you feeling very angry, confused, or both.

3. The Godfather

Wikipedia (obviously they know what they’re talking about) says that the Godfather cocktail is equal parts scotch whisky and amaretto.

If you really want to take your taste buds to the mattresses, go without the ice.

4. The Warriors

“Warr-i-ors! Come out to play-ay!” Hands-down, one of the most creeptacular moments of NYC films.

We recommend this one with a drink from The Warriors’ home turf, Coney Island.

Namely, the Coney Island Iced Tea. It’s easy, just take your iced tea, add some rum, and boom. You’re welcome.

5. King Kong

You can’t go wrong with a banana daiquiri smoothie with this one.

Sure, the King of the Apes doesn’t arrive to the Big Apple (when was the last time anyone called it that?) until the final act, but we’re too busy slurping down these drinks to care.

Get your banana, rum, triple sec, and maybe a tiny bit of ice and blend it up! Your roaring blender might not be as loud as King Kong, but the havoc your blender wreaks bears better fruit.

6. You’ve Got Mail

Look, we love this movie. Love, love, love it. It's a heartwarming reimagining of The Little Shop Around the Corner with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

Oh, and this supporting cast is pretty sweet too. Steve Zahn, Parker Posey, and Dave Chappelle (yeah, you're gonna watch it now, aren't you?) all have good turns.

Because this is a bubbly, feel-good movie, we're pairing it with some bubbly, feel-good champagne. Don't even bother with a glass, just swig right from the bottle.

A sweet and refreshing drink that we think Meg Ryan would approve of.
