Time has swept away 2015, and it's taken some really great bars, restaurants, and people with it.

In 2015, we lost Yogi Berra, Randolph Holder, Hogs & Heifers, the Market Diner, and the FAO Schwarz in Midtown and the Toys R Us in Times Square.

Even sadder: these aren't the only people, places, and things we lost last year.

The last two Barnes & Nobles in Queens were forced to shut down. The very first Zaro's Bakery in the Bronx was forced to shut its doors to make room for a Boston Market.

These are only some examples of beloved NYC institutions hurled into nonexistence thanks to rising rents and corporate chains. Can we please have a moment of silence for NYC's beloved bars, restaurants, and stores that were forced out of business in 2015?

Seriously. In 2015 we lost bookstores, skateboard stores, and vintage shops we loved. In exchange, we'll probably get soulless, indifferent 7-Elevens and Dunkin' Donuts. We've memorialized the places we're devastated to lose below.

Of course, you'll undoubtedly notice the trend in these closings: the rent keeps climbing. Let's all make a New Year's resolution to shop at as many independent NYC stores as we can in 2016, so we don't have to post another article like this next year.
