We've been yearning for this announcement for years. Really. Years. It's been since the 2012 travesty of Sandy Hook, you know, the one where we thought the deaths of children would encourage transformative reform when it comes to gun control.

Obama's been clawing after this legislation for his entire presidency. He came at the nation hard in October after a spat of mass shootings made him feel helpless.

"As I said a few months ago, and a few months before that, our thoughts and prayers are not enough," Obama said in October.

Still, we had to endure mass shootings in San Bernardino and Colorado Springs. We had to cope with the death of NYC officer Randolph Holder. Finally, Tuesday morning, something's been done.

Fighting back tears, Obama announced a new executive action on gun control.

These actions will require gun vendors to strengthen background checks on gun purchases, and will make these background checks mandatory. These measures will be put in place without the approval of congress.

Surrounded by Americans who lost their loved ones to gun violence, Obama cried while he made the triumphant announcement.

"The United States of America is not the only country on Earth with violent or dangerous people. We are not inherently more prone to violence - but we are the only advanced country on Earth that sees this kind of mass violence erupt with this kind of frequency," Obama said.

The major point of the policy is to address the "gun show loophole," which allows the purchase of guns from private vendors at gun shows and online without background checks.

"If you're in the business of selling firearms, you must get a license and conduct background checks," the White House announced in a statement emailed on Monday night outlining the policy.

These measures come as a relief for plenty who are tired of living in fear, and tired of seeing innocent Americans dead in pools of blood. We're hoping these new requirements provide relief in the mass shooting epidemic in the United States of America.
