Well, we all knew this day would come.

It seems as if the first misuse of the LinkNYC hubs finally hit the streets of New York City last night.

In short, graffiti artist KATSU was able to disturb some innocent New Yorkers by posting images of hardcore pornography and graphic, violent images onto the screens of the public internet portal.

KATSU told The Creators Project that he was passing one of the terminals, which he believed were simply free wi-fi and USB charging stations, only to see a homeless man browsing the internet.

In true form, he returned to an open hub to find out what sort of securities were placed on the browsing.

"They definitely have keywords blocked out, like PornHub and those places, but I start searching and I'm like, holy shit I can still do full-fledged Google Image searches for rowdy shit. So there's crowds of people walking by and I'm looking at galleries of dead insurgents," he told The Creators Project

Just imagine walking to work and glancing at the fairly large screens only to be gazing at a couple of flexible fornicators in the midst of bumping uglies, doing the deed, scratching the itch, stuffing the doughnut, taming the dragon, etc.

That's exactly what some unlucky (or lucky, we don't judge) passersby received an eyeful of as they meandered down the street.

Fortunately, KATSU wasn't interested in malicious uses of the public portals beyond this instance of technovandalism, though he recognized the particular issues in security that the portals pose on the general public.

"[The new wi-fi terminals] raise a bunch of questions about the internet-as-public-payphone, and also the use of these terminals; what their plans are and what they're thinking. There's a forward-facing camera on their tablets and... I guarantee that they're doing some funky thumb printing," he said.

He noted that they (whether hackers or the people behind LinkNYC) could "create an identifier for each individual" and track them using that identifier whenever they pass through public wifi space.

Whether or not the hubs or hackers can actually develop ways to track individuals from the technology being implemented on our city's streets remains to be seen, but LinkNYC issued a report stating that the search issues have been remedied.

"LinkNYC strives to maintain a safe environment while still balancing free and open internet access... This morning, SafeSearch settings were turned on across all Link tablets system wide. While no content filtering system will ever be perfect, we will continue to fine-tun LinkNYC's settings."

So unfortunately, if you have an unwavering desire to browse some smut, you'll have to wait to do it within the privacy of your own home.
