In a lot of ways, the old days of New York City remain a bit of a mystery.

And while we love shiny new things like the Whitney Art Museum or these insane plans for a potential extension of the High Line, it's always fascinating when we can get our hands on anything that remains from historical NYC.

With so many buildings and businesses are coming and going every single day, this can sometimes be difficult to grasp.

But every once in a while, we get a glimpse of what that world was like.

Thanks to drone footage captured by New Jersey resident Chad Aaronson, we're getting a rare look at the marine salvage yard off the coast of Staten Island, where old ships have been left abandon to rust and sink into the mud.

The footage, while definitely a little eerie, is also incredibly mesmerizing.

Check it out for yourself.
